ClubTest 2025 testing process: How we identified the year's best clubs

For GOLF’s 2025 ClubTest, we brought back thorough player testing to produce a firsthand look at how the market’s new drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons really perform. Testing occurred at Desert Mountain GC in Scottsdale, Ariz., with 32 amateur players paired with eight True Spec Golf master fitters to work through more than 100 new clubs.

Each tester spent two days testing all products. We divided them into four groups relative to their established USGA handicap, which ranged from +2 to a 23, and guided each to products our fitting experts felt would suit them best. For example, players who normally struggle to get the ball in the air were given super-forgiving and high-launch products. On the flip side, testers with high swing speeds and who generate lots of spin focused on low-spin products.

For each club, testers were paired up with a True Spec master fitter to capture their testing data using a Foresight Sports Quad-MAX and FSX Pro software. In addition, we asked each master fitter to test the new products themselves and provide feedback which will come to life in a bounty of content on GOLF.com.

We’re confident that our process delivers a relatable account for our audience to absorb and research new gear based on their skill level to make the game easier and a lot more fun.

THE BASICS: The standard Black Ops offers a large front-to-back profile, and the largest heel-to-toe measurement allowed under the Rules of Golf to maximize MOI. With the larger shape, the crown is more aggressively angled to allow the face to be larger to boost up and down and side to side MOI, which gets very close to the 10K g-cm2 total MOI in the standard weight configuration. Add a few grams of weight to the rear weight port and the Black Ops easily surpasses the 10k g-cm2 number currently being touted by other OEMs.

THE BASICS: The Mizuno JPX 925 Hot Metal Pro is the better player offering in a lineup that consists of three models (Pro, Standard and HL). THE BASICS: Ping pushed the CG position low and back with the help from a high-density tungsten sole plate and Carbonfly Wrap crown, which reduce spin and increase ball speed. The titanium face, which blends into the crown and sole, also helps to boost speed. One nice bonus: The LST fairway wood family now offers a 19-degree 5-wood, whereas the previous generation offered only a 3-wood.

Ping fairway woods have always been successful at helping golfers launch the ball off the deck thanks to their shallow profiles. “The one complaint we have heard is, ‘I wish it was just a little taller.  I want to hit it off the tee,’” said Travis Milleman, Ping’s design engineering manager. The issue was making a taller-faced fairway wood while still keeping the CG low to increase launch, which was difficult to do from an engineering standpoint. But just as the drivers were able to move weight back from the new Free Hosel design, Milleman said Ping used the weight saved in the fairway woods to grow the face at a one-for-one ratio.

For mid- to high-handicap players, forgiveness is a must with drivers. And it can come in multiple forms, both helping with accuracy and distance. As part of our ClubTest 2025 buying guide, we tried to determine which driver models are best suited for golfers who are in need of a little forgiveness.
