One tricky thing for a club fitter can be putting together their own golf bag.

While some have all the expertise in the world, like Ian Fraser, the founder of the Fraser Golf Institute, and essentially unlimited resources to try whatever clubs and shafts they need, they still lean on others for some help.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-host Wadeh Maroun pointed out that in a recent video, Fraser was going back and forth between two drivers, a Titleist GT3 and a TaylorMade Qi35 LS. But Maroun asked him what he was doing about the putter, as he has played a Scotty Cameron Champions Choice blade for several years, but was recently fit into a mallet.

“When I was in Hong Kong and we got a full L.A.B. putter matrix, we got a full Scotty [Cameron] matrix. I tried a bunch of stuff,” Fraser said. “Honestly, none of it was any good for me. It was nice. And I just don’t putt that well with L.A.B. putters.”

Fraser said he was heading out to the Titleist Performance Institute to work with Paul Vizanko, Cameron’s director of player fitting and development, to see if they could find anything better. Fraser also said he works with Titleist’s senior director of player promotion, J.J. Van Wezenbeeck, for the top of his bag.

Scotty Cameron Studio Style Newport 2 Putter

STUDIO CARBON STEEL (SCS) FACE INSERT Designed to deliver the unmistakably soft sound and feel of carbon, the new precision milled Studio Carbon Steel (SCS) insert is treated with an electroless nickel plating for enhanced durability in a re–engineered concept that includes the line’s new chain–link face milling technology and aerospace–inspired vibration damping for tuned sound, feel and performance. CHAIN–LINK FACE MILLING TECHNOLOGY New chain–link face milling technology reduces the putter face insert’s touch points at impact with the ball using a texture that softens the sound and provides improved roll characteristics while preserving feel and feedback off the putter face. FULL CONTACT SLIM GRIP With a comfortable chain–link texture to match the new putter face milling pattern, the custom crafted Full Contact Slim paddle–style grip was designed to complement the stroke and performance of blade and mid–mallet putters. Its uniquely contoured profile and flat top provide superior comfort and contact between the hands and the putter, and enhanced body alignment.

“I can’t wait to see what ends up happening there,” Maroun said. “Because that Champions Choice is pretty bloody hard to get out of your bag.”

But Fraser isn’t sure anything will really change given that he is about to start a big competitive schedule.

“Honestly, there’s a good chance that it doesn’t leave the bag because at this point. I mean, I’ve got a full Canadian amateur schedule of tournaments to play this year,” Fraser said. “I probably have a tournament schedule that’s probably got 20 events to play in.

“So I’m kind of taking this stuff a little bit seriously now. And the club revolving door, because obviously I’m not in that kind of space anymore. There’s not that much change going on.”

From where I sit, 3D technology as it relates to a golf club has always been a “yah, someday” concept.

I remember the first time I actually saw something get 3D printed — it was probably seven or eight years ago when an astronaut 3D printed a tool in space. It seemed wild at the time, until I realized folks have been 3D printing items for years, sending me down a bunch of rabbit holes.

At no time did I ever think this technology would make its way to golf, but here we are.

As many companies pick lanes to guide them on their technology evolution (Callaway and its pursuit of Ai dominance for example) Cobra Golf has gone all in on 3D and has leveled up with each iteration.

Cobra 3DP Tour Custom Irons

The KING 3D Printed TOUR irons utilize 3D printing technology to unlock a new realm of performance. Their one of a kind design features the most forgiving blade shape on the market, delivering the forgiveness that aspirational players need, and the sleek looks and soft feel that better players desire. 3D PRINTED STEEL CONSTRUCTION Each iron is fully 3D printed from 316 stainless steel. 3D printing provides significant advantages over traditional methods of casting and forging, unlocking more design freedom and significant performance improvements. FORGIVING PLAYERS BLADE SHAPE 3D printing has unlocked new design possibilities, enabling COBRA engineers to create a compact blade shape with the mass properties (high MOI, low CG) of a game improvement iron without sacrificing looks and soft feel that better players demand. INTERNAL LATTICE STRUCTURE COBRA took a muscle-back blade shape (similar in size and shape to the KING TOUR iron), and transformed the inside of the blade into a complex internal lattice structure to reduce the weight of the club by 33%. That discretionary weight was repositioned to optimize feel, CG position, and MOI.
View Product

Recall at the beginning of 2025, it was new Cobra staffer Max Homa who put a fully 3D’d set of muscleback irons in play. I’ve seen ’em up close; they’re flawless. That’s the first thing you will find with anything in the 3D or Metal-injection-molding buckets — the tolerances and consistency club-to-club is at tight as it gets.

Now comes 3D printed putters.

Introducing the New Cobra Golf 3DP Putters

Three things to know

  1. 3D printing has opened up some new opportunities for performance lanes that I don’t even think Cobra realized at first: In club design there’s is always a point where you have to juggle between weight tolerances. For example you can design a putter with an extremely high MOI and is super forgiving, but at some point you are limited by how much that particular head will weigh. So a choice must be made to sacrifice one to satisfy the other. With the 3D process that decision gets wiped off the table. If you want to put a high MOI package in a lesser-MOI chassis, it’s possible with 3D printing. Since Cobra is producing these out of a block of steel it actually allows engineers to produce the head at the required design, drill out weight from one location and re-distribute it wherever they like. Take the ENZO design for example, which has up to 170G of weight replaced with lattice which allowed Cobra R&D to redistribute that weight forward with zero compromise on feel and performance.
  2. All Cobra 3DP putters have descending loft technology. Made famous by Sik — now LA Golf — this face technology has four points of loft from top to bottom (four degrees up top and one degree at the bottom) which allows the putter to be optimized for players who lean their shaft and those who add loft at impact.
  3. The only way to make putters with these performance properties is via 3D printing. It’s a new frontier in what’s possible for all club design. The best way to describe it is total production efficiency with very little compromise in the design-vs-weight-tolerance dilemma. Here’s Cobra’s Sr. Product Line Manager Chad DeHart: “As leaders in technology and innovation, we recognized the potential of 3D printing to create more advanced products, the impressive performance gains of the LIMIT3D irons made it an easy decision to apply the same technology to putters. We are excited to introduce these new models and believe players will be impressed by their performance.”

When Brian Harman won last week’s Valero Texas Open using a TaylorMade Spider 5K-ZT Prototype putter, eyebrows went up around the golf world.

It was the first win for TaylorMade’s first zero torque putter, which has yet to hit retail shops and adds more fuel to the hottest craze in professional golf, next to mini drivers.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-hosts Johnny Wunder and Wadeh Maroun both discussed their thoughts on zero torque putters and how they can work for a lot of people but maybe not everyone.

“I think they are very, very awesome band-aid to have,” said Wunder. “If you are really struggling, it’s a nice reset to get you back to get the path together. If you’re way out of line, I think for the right player, they’re unbelievable.”

By: Jack Hirsh

Wunder said he used a SeeMore center shafted putter once and shot 67 one day and 79 the next day without being able to “hit the hole from two feet.”

His friend Charles Howell III was using the PXG Allan zero torque putter and had trouble figuring out why he felt he was hitting good putts but couldn’t make anything.

“Well, because you’re a releaser of the putter head, meaning you release it so that when you have something that’s resisting torque as much as these things do, for a better player, if you have any kind of sensitivity in your hands or your fingers, unless you’re going to resign to the fact that you’re just barely going to touch the putter, you’re going to barely hold on to it and just let the putter swing you essentially, you’re going to fight the overcorrection,” Wunder told Howell. “What you experienced is the same thing I experienced.”

Because players like Wunder and Howell like to release the putter head and let the toe turnover, they have a tendency to miss left.

L.A.B. Golf founder Sam Hahn is likely aware of these tendencies, and Wadeh Maroun found that out when he visited L.A.B.’s facility in Oregon.

L.A.B. Golf OZ.1i Putter

Zero Torque. Zero Compromise. MEZZ.1 MAX makes it easy for any golfer to benefit from Lie Angle Balance. It looks pretty much like a normal putter. But it actually helps you make putts.  MEZZ.1 MAX Stock is our new oversized mallet putter that’s fully CNC machined from a billet of 6061 aircraft aluminum (body) and 303 stainless steel (midsection) to create outrageous stability. It includes 10 weights (eight on the bottom, two on the sides) that allow us to individually build each putter to a golfer’s exact specifications.

“One of the things that he said was, if you accelerate through the ball, it’s very hard to utilize his technology,” Maroun said. “That’s why he always gives you those drills to get to that motion of letting gravity take its handle and do what it needs to do. Personally for me, I think — and I’ve said this before and I agree with you. I’ve said it before on the show. It’s going to be for some people, it’s not going to be for everybody.”

Maroun suggests that players who release the putter head try a zero torque putter in a broomstick or counter-balance configuration since it’s a completely different stroke.

But ultimately, if you’re already a solid putter, you might not gain much by going to a zero torque model.

“I’ve seen people, I’ve seen bad putters be made into decent putters with L.A.B.,” Wunder said. “I’ve never seen a good putter get to be a phenomenal putter with a L.A.B., right?”

Everyone is excited to get a new golf club, but it can be even more exciting to get a new flatstick.

After all, the putter is the most used club in the bag, so it’s not uncommon for a lot of players to show a little personality with their putters.

Last week, Fully Equipped’s Wadeh Maroun received a new putter that certainly qualifies as showing his roots. Maroun got a brand new custom Lajosi putter. Lajosi is a bespoke putter maker out of Melbourne, Australia and they typically only do custom putter designs where customers pick everything from the neck, shape, face material, milling pattern, paintfill and more.

Despite being from Australia, Wadeh didn’t discover Lajosi until after he moved to the States and started playing golf. But he appreciated the opportunity to work with Lajosi to craft a putter that was perfect for him.

“I think a lot of people think that with putters, it’s like the major guys and what have you,” Maroun said on this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped. “But there is so much that you can do with putters now with like those bespoke companies, like a Lajosi or even an Embrace Putters.

“The beauty of working with these kinds of companies is that you can get it to exactly what you want.”

Of course, there are still advantages to going with a putter from an OEM like TaylorMade, Odyssey or Scotty Cameron, such as their proprietary technology and millions of dollars of year that go into developing it.

But if budget is less of a concern and you want something unique, there are a lot more options when going the bespoke route.

“But if you’re someone that likes a milled putter that has very specific needs and wants,” Maroun said. “Like I need 5 to 10 to 15 degrees of toe hang. Like I need very little toe hang. But I like looking at a plumber’s neck.

“So working with these kinds of guys to get a long plumber’s neck in there, which helps that balance point out, which makes it more of a face balance, like you can’t do that with off-the-rack stuff. So it’s kind of cool to be able to work with these bespoke guys to get built out exactly what you want.”

Perusing the range at LIV Golf is a gearhead’s dream, and there’s a pretty unique reason why.

This week marks LIV’s return to U.S. soil with the LIV Golf Miami event and GOLF’s Johnny Wunder has been on the ground at Trump National Doral, taking in all the sights from the driving range.

And that includes a few unique gear finds you won’t likely see anywhere else.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-hosts Kris McCormack and Wadeh Maroun pointed out the reason there’s so much unique gear on LIV Golf and, unsurprisingly, it has to do with money.

“LIV doesn’t have the big equipment contracts that the PGA Tour does. So the stuff that he is finding in bags is just cool,” McCormack said. “So they can play what they want, when they want, where they want, and they don’t really have to answer to anybody.”

What piqued both Maroun and McCormack’s interest was seeing Bryson DeChambeau’s bag. DeChambeau was a Cobra Golf staffer when he left the PGA Tour for LIV in 2022 but has since become a gear free agent, with his bag comprising of brands like LA GOLF, Avoda and Krank.

Wunder got pictures of the Avoda 3D-printed irons DeChambeau famously put in play just before the Masters last year and won the U.S. Open with, as well as the prototype LA Golf irons he’s testing. DeChambeau was also testing the recently launched LA Golf driver.

“Even [Wunder] said, when we were texting about it, is like, they’re even better in real life,” Maroun said of the irons.

The LA Golf driver features a unique design with different faces, each with a different bulge and roll design optimized for swing speed.

The LA Golf irons appear to feature a similar bulge and roll design.

“Looking at the pictures, I would say that there is a healthy amount,” McCormack said. “I’m anxiously awaiting the opportunity to hit these things. Yeah. I need to call somebody.”

Gapping can be one of the most important steps to optimizing your bag to shoot the lowest scores, and that extends all the way to the wedges.

While most players consider wedges scoring clubs or clubs that will save you shots around the green, longtime pro Charles Howell III said you should choose which wedges to play in your bag based on how far you hit them from the fairway.

Howell joined Johnny Wunder on this week’s edition of GOLF’s Fully Equipped and talked about how he likes to set up his wedge gapping for professional events. Howell currently plays a 52-56-60 wedge setup, but he adjusts the lofts to make them fit the yardage window he wants.

“Like I want 130 yards out of my 52 degree, well, I’ve got to make it a little under 51 to get that,” Howell said. “So, Nick, my caddie and I started, how far do we need this ball to go? Let’s just get the loft there.”

4 tips on gear (and life) I found on the PGA Tour Champions
By: Johnny Wunder

Howell says many people get hung up on having lofts that are supposed to be what is standard (i.e. four-degree gappings). You should focus on having each wedge go the proper number.

Wunder added that the concept of not caring about what the actual loft of the club is and just worrying about the carry yardage is a common one amongst the best in the world.

“You take Phil [Mickelson]’s bag, for example, Phil’s 4- and 5-iron part of his bag, it depends if the hybrids in, but like if he has a 4- and a 5-iron, his 4-iron might be 22 degrees and his 5-iron might be 22 degrees,” Wunder said. “It doesn’t matter to him, like he doesn’t care about the lofts or the clubs.

“That’s another thing that people get really held up on is the lofts. Like, ‘I need an 18-degree club.’ No, you need a 220-club. You need a 215-club. They might be the same loft, but it doesn’t matter. It’s all about carry distance, especially when you get to 7-, 8-, 9-, pitching wedge. When you get to that money maker part of the bag is when you really want to back into the loft.”

The three-time PGA Tour and one-time LIV Golf winner also said golfers shouldn’t shy away from playing more bounce on their lob wedges.

Howell said he likes to have a mid-bounce lob wedge while many pros use low-bounce wedges, and if he ever feels like it’s too tight for him to be comfortable, he’ll just stand the shaft more vertically and hit the shot off the toe.

“I think most people can benefit from a little more bounce than they believe,” Howell said.

One of my great missions in life — beyond being a good dad and a golfer I can be proud of again — is finding a bag setup that maximizes what I do. Yes, that’s always the goal with any fitting, but what is the metric to really identify if that new driver actually levels you up?

There is a really fun stat on PGATour.com that represents exactly that. It’s called Total Driving Efficiency. TDE is the combination of two key metrics:

Carry Efficiency: “The ratio of a player’s average carry distance and his average swing speed when measured by the radar device (Average Carry Distance / Average Swing Speed). This creates a ratio of yards per miles per hour.” — via the PGA Tour

Distance Efficiency: “The ratio of a player’s average total distance and his average swing speed when measured by the radar device (Average Total Distance / Average Swing Speed). This creates a ratio of yards per miles per hour.” — via the PGA Tour

Add these rankings up and you get a number that is Total Driving Efficiency.

Why does Total Driving Efficiency matter?

Most popular Tour stats live around carry distance, ball speed and accuracy. But what stat out there speaks to the perfect fit of a golf club? That’s TDE.

Simply put, it speaks to how well the driver (for this discussion) in hand harmonizes with a particular player. Have you ever had a “unicorn” golf club? That one club you hit outta the middle, went a mile, went straight, all the time? Well that’s what this stat references — and it’s not talked about enough.

Think of it in terms of optimization. Let’s use Tour leader Greyson Sigg as our example. Sigg is 175th in swing speed at 109.56 mph but he also averages 296 yards off the tee. Granted that’s carry plus rollout, but that is a big number for that swing speed. According to TrackMan optimization, which is a chart that shows the perfect numbers at specific swing speeds and launch conditions, Sigg is at the tip of the spear. That means that beyond swinging it faster, his driver numbers can’t get any better. That’s called maxed out, people, and it’s a beautiful thing.

European Ryder Cupper Sepp Straka is another one that checks off this box. He swings it at just shy of 112 mph and averages 295 yards off the tee, ranking him third on Tour.

This performance is a Tour fitter’s badge of honor because what they have accomplished is two-fold:

1. They put the perfect head in harmony with the perfect shaft into the player’s hands.

2. They legitimately took a player that may live speed-wise in one category but allowed them to compete in another because the club worked so well.

When a fitter and a product can provide that much value to a player, it’s crucial. Yes, technique is a huge part of this, but it’s not often that things come together at this level. It’s a very hard thing to pull off at a Tour level. So when it does happen, there’s a ton to learn.

One of the perks of playing professional golf is access to more gear than you can imagine. If you’re a gear nerd like our Johnny Wunder or longtime pro Charles Howell III, it can truly make your head spin.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, Wunder and Howell sat down to talk about how a tour pro tests gear. Howell said it comes down to simply hitting, guessing and then trying things to see if they work.

Howell said club fitting has improved greatly in the years he’s played professionally, but also that he’s used the same True Temper Dynamic Golf X100 iron shaft for pretty much his whole career. He can’t exactly point to the reason why.

“Partly is because it’s True Temper, right?” Howell said. “Another reason has been Tiger Woods used it, and he beat all of our tails with it. OK, that’s partially true, too.

Think a club-fitting isn’t for you? Here’s why you are wrong
By: Kris McCormack

“But then, but why are you using it? Like, what did you go through to say that this beat out a KBS, beat out a Project X, beat out a Nippon, or anything else you want to throw into it? We really don’t know.”

That’s where guessing comes into play, because it’s tough to know exactly how a player loads a club or even if they are swinging the same way they normally do on the day they’re testing gear.

By making educated guesses, building up a club and then trying it out and really putting it through its paces, that’s how you develop comfort and trust in your gamers.

“The hard part in golf for everybody is you don’t really know until you get on a golf course in a tournament or pressure-ish type situation to see does it perform,” Howell said. “Because everyone listening to this podcast knows there’s a difference between the driving range and the golf course and then the golf course under pressure.”

Wunder, who during his tenure at Callaway used to fit Howell, agreed.

“Collectively, we’ve both known this, but we’ve figured it out for you specifically,” Wunder said. “There is a huge difference between Isleworth’s driving range and then getting Charlie out on LIV and banging balls around.”

Some of the questions we, as gear writers, get asked the most are “Who makes the best driver?”; “Who makes the best irons?”; “Who makes the best putters?”, etc.

It’s a question that’s usually met with a disappointing response, because, now, more than ever before, there truly is no “best,” because every OEM is making outstanding gear. The trick is just finding what works best for you and your golf swing.

This is something our new director of gear, Johnny Wunder, is experiencing firsthand. Wunder just joined GOLF after four years at Callaway.

I tested Srixon’s ZXi irons. Here’s what impressed me most
By: Johnny Wunder

Now he’s testing gear from every manufacturer and seeing quickly just how good everything on the market really is.

“I need to preface it by saying this; Everybody makes good stuff,” Wunder told GOLF’s Fully Equipped co-hosts Kris McCormack and Wadeh Maroun on this week’s episode. “So what I’m noticing is that the separation between good versus not good is not really there anymore. It’s all a different kind of good. So everybody’s got their different idea of what makes something fast and forgiving. This is for irons, drivers, for everything.”

Wunder added that it’s harder than ever before to pick gear and it really comes down to the nuances of what you like best and what you like looking at.

OEMs are also so much better top to bottom, meaning you could pick one to play every club in the bag with, and not be losing anything because one brand doesn’t make great wedges or one doesn’t make great fairway woods, etc. You’re not giving up anything by playing one brand.

Wunder brought up testing the new Srixon ZXi drivers (he’s been loving the Srixon ZXi irons) because he remembered not being impressed by the company’s big sticks previously. Not anymore.

“I just hit their driver the other day and I’m like, this thing’s awesome,” Wunder said.

This is one of the reasons McCormack said he loves taking people to Carlsbad, where most of the OEMs call home, for the first time. He did this in December, taking Maroun and myself there for the first time, visiting Titleist, KBS, Cobra, Fujikura, Callaway and TaylorMade. Wunder is there now, visiting several OEMs.

“I love taking guys there for the first time and letting them kind of go through the process,” McCormack said. “Like you give a good fitter [from the OEMs] enough time and enough resources and they can pretty much beat anything.”

I can’t count how many times someone has told me they aren’t good enough to play forged clubs — and it’s one of those golf stigmas that OEMs and gear writers just can’t quite figure out how to crack.

Let me go ahead and say for the record, it just ain’t true, especially in the last few years as new forged players distance offerings have come into the market.

When it comes to Miura Golf irons, it seems sometimes the whole brand can fall victim to only being well-fit for elite ball strikers. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, Miura’s North American sales manager, Blake Smith, joined co-hosts Kris McCormack and Wadeh Maroun to go behind the scenes of the new TC-202 irons. Being the flagship model for the brand, Smith said lots of players could start with the 202 for their fittings.

“You hit the 202, you’re like, ‘Oh, when I hit it really well, that’s the Miura feel,'” Smith said. “And we like to talk about the Miura feel as more of a punch rather than a slap. Slap is more — I think we’ve all felt that — but the Miura feel is more of a solid, mass feel. Right?

“So then from there, you can start to test like the 302, and if the 302 is in your category, then there you go. And then you can go to the 602, and it’s a rocket. It’s a different construction. The 401 is even more of a rocket, and you go less loft as you get up there.”

If you fall in love with the feel of the 202, but aren’t ready for a players iron that small, then Miura has options like the CB-302, IC-602 or PI-401 to suit whatever needs you might be looking for.

Maroun, a 2 handicap, actually goes the other way and loves to play the KM-700 blades. Unlike other blades where you would typically find that you need to hit the center to get the ball to carry the proper distance, Maroun notices the ball still has some pop off those irons when he isn’t swinging his best. He sees that with the new 202 as well.

“The most impressive thing I found about the 202 was the speed,” he said. “It’s a really fast iron, and I think that’s why I fell in love with the KM-700 so much, because I wanted something that was a one piece that I didn’t have — if I was only 80 percent of my swing because my back wasn’t feeling it, or my hips weren’t feeling it, I’m not losing much distance”

Maroun thinks, because the new TC-202 irons are so fast, he could see players who might go toward the larger 602 and 401 choosing the 202 over them.

“I do think there’s a reason why like a 10 or a 12 handicap could actually play something like a 202 or a 700 versus going into a 602 or a 401 is because the speed profile of these irons is, it’s very complimentary to people that don’t necessarily utilize a lot of speed in their game,” he said.
